Tradities en rituelen worden overal in India met eerbied in stand gehouden. Ze verankeren niet alleen de maatschappelijke verhoudingen, maar hebben ook een remmende invloed op ontwikkelingen. Zo blijven onwetenden onwetend en kanslozen kansloos. ‘Je bent geboren om te doen wat je doen moet’ is een heersende opvatting die onveranderbaar lijkt.
Maar er zijn organisaties die dit proberen te doorbreken. Juist gebruikmakend van tradities, waarin zang, dans en theater een rol spelen.

Ook de maatschappij stampt de gedachte erin dat ze arm zijn en dat zullen blijven.
Dat kan alleen veranderen als het kind een bewustzijn ontwikkelt dat het in zich heeft te bereiken wat het wil.

Aanvankelijk, toen we begonnen met onze opvoeringen in de dorpen, werd het vooral beschouwd als amusement.
Maar omdat we dorpskwesties tot onze thema’s maakten, begonnen mensen ons te erkennen.

In het begin zijn ze verbaasd en verrast:
‘Hoe kunnen we bruiloftsliedjes gebruiken?’
Of ‘ Past het lied dat mijn moeder onder het werken neuriet wel in het toneelstuk?’
Maar voor ons zijn al die deuntjes en liedjes belangrijk.

In de Indiase samenleving wordt vastgehouden aan vele orthodoxe en verkeerde gewoonten.
We zingen ‘bhajans’ op bijeenkomsten om deze gewoonten te doorbreken, opdat de samenleving zal veranderen en vooruitkomen.
All over India traditions and rituals are kept alive out of respect. They are the reason that social relations are fixed and that developments are curbed. That’s why the uneducated stay uneducated and the losers remain losers. The idea that ‘you are born to do what you must do’ is the prevailing view which can’t be altered.
But there are organizations which try to change this. Right in making use of traditions in which songs, dance and theater are important.

Society also drills the idea that you are poor and you remain poor for the rest of your existence. That can only change if the child develop some of awareness that I have it in me to achieve whatever it is that I want.

In the beginning when we staged our programmes in the villages, it was considered to be entertainment. But because we put on themes concerning village problems, people began to recognize us.

In the beginning they register their surprise: ‘How can we use songs which are sung during marriages?’ Or, ‘whether songs hummed by my mother while working, will be appropriate in the play?’ But for us all these tunes and songs are important.

Nowadays Indian society retains many bad orthodox customs. We sing ‘bhajans’ among assembled people to eradicate these customs, so that society will change and make progress.
